Colour Award System

Achievement and participation in all Sport and other Co-curricular activities are celebrated twice a year at separate Winter and Summer Colour Award Assemblies.

Criteria for gaining a Colour Award

  • There are three Colour awards that can be gained by students at St Pius X College. They are BLUE, SILVER and GOLD. The three awards represent three levels of achievement and participation. The Colour Awards are made of an enamelled colour (Blue, Silver, Gold) on a metal pin that can be placed on the student’s College tie or College blazer.
  • In general, these awards are given to students for excellence, commitment, encouragement and service in a particular co-curricular sport or activity.

Blue Award: Level One

  • May be obtained by any student from Years 7-12.
  • The student must attend training sessions and matches.
  • The student must exhibit high performance at training and matches.
  • The student must exhibit above average ability in the particular sport or activity.
  • The student must have participated in the
    particular sport or activity for at least two
    consecutive years. The exception to this is the student who is ‘new’ to the College and could not possibly do two consecutive years in a particular sport or activity.
  • The student must exhibit full commitment
    to the team and display evidence of extra
    training and service.
  • The student must be nominated by the coach or person in charge of the sport or activity. The Convenor of the sport or activity must be prepared to endorse the coach’s nomination.

Silver Award: Level 2

  • The student must already possess a Blue Award (Level One) for the particular sport or activity. The exception to this is the student who is ‘new’ to the College.
  • May be obtained by any student from Years 11 to 12.
  • The student must exhibit the potential to be placed in the College’s highest team(s) in the particular sport or activity (or equivalent).
  • The student must exhibit leadership qualities and have a positive influence on others around him.
  • The student must exhibit the potential to gain higher representative honours (or equivalent) beyond the College in the particular sport or activity. (e.g. ISA triallist).
  • The student must be able to demonstrate service and commitment to the particular sport or activity by assisting the coach/convenor in organisation and administration.
  • The student must be able to demonstrate involvement with and encouragement of junior teams and younger individuals within the particular sport or activity via mentoring, coaching, and modelling.
  • The student must be nominated by the coach or the person in charge of the sport or activity. The Convenor of the sport or activity must be prepared to endorse the coach’s nomination.

Gold Award: Level Three

  • The student must already possess a Blue Award (Level One) and a Silver Award (Level Two) for the particular sport or activity. The exception to this is the student who is ‘new’ to the College.
  • May be obtained by any student from Year 12.
  • The student must have participated in the particular sport or activity at the highest level in the College.
  • The student must have qualified to represent the Independent School Association (ISA) in the particular sport (or equivalent for an activity).
  • All the elements of the Silver Award criteria in service, commitment and encouragement of others in the particular sport or activity must be self evident in the nominee for a Gold Award
  • The student must be nominated by the coach or person in charge of the sport or activity. The Convenor of the sport or activity must be prepared to endorse the Coach’s nomination.

Equivalents

Equivalents for higher representation in non-sporting activities may include but are not limited to: Senior Ensembles, gaining musical scholarships, award recipient/high placement in eisteddfods or competitions, sustained participation in an orchestra/choir/band at a local or national level, Senior Debating/Public Speaking. Rehearsals are synonymous with training requirements.

Note: 

  • A student cannot receive a higher award (unless exceptional circumstances exist) unless he has received a lesser one.
  • Only the highest colour badge is worn.
  • Enquiries regarding these awards should be directed to the Sportsmaster.
  • Appeals can be addressed in writing to the Principal: he is the final arbiter of awards (criteria and equivalents).
