HSC Results 2021

St Pius X College Dux 2021 James Scaiff with College Principal Mr John Couani

St Pius X College is very proud of the excellent results achieved by its HSC class of 2021. The past two years for this cohort were particularly difficult on a number of levels and the students worked together to rise above the many challenges with great style.

The Dux for the year is James Scaiff from Forestville who achieved the outstanding ATAR of 99.4 and was nominated as a State All Rounder. James is a fine student who first started at the College in Year 5.  James is an accomplished musician, debater and is fluent in Chinese. He hopes to study Engineering at UNSW with a particular focus on Solar Energy. It is worth noting that close behind James were another six students who achieved highly commendable ATARS of 98 or above.

There were a number of exceptional results. Max Leo, a Year 11 accelerant student was first in New South Wales in the very demanding Advanced Mathematics Course, achieving full marks in it. Also, Thomas Cooper was ranked seventh in the state for Industrial Technology. These are exceptional results and are a credit to the students and their teachers. Overall, there were five boys in the Top All Rounders List: Warnakulasuriya Fernando; Thomas Hopkins: Joshua Jones, James Scaiff and Thomas Van Dijk (awarded posthumously). In total there were 119 mentions in the Distinguished Achievers list. This strong result reflects the achievements of the great majority of subjects with results well above state averages with many more than five marks so.

Other High Achievers from the class of 2021 included the following nominations recognising special merit: Alec Ramsbottom in Drama for OnSTAGE; Ben Giles in Music for ENCORE; Reece Williams in Design and Technology for SHAPE 2021 and Thomas Cooper in Industrial Technology for SHAPE 2021. Another one of our Year 12 students, Luke Massa, was an award winner in the 2021 Science Teachers’ Association NSW Young Scientist Awards for his Science extension project:  Spontaneous Knotting and the Loop Conjecture. Over 40% students of 2121 received early offers to further studies. Mitchell Hayes received an offer to attend the prestigious National Art School (NAS) in Darlinghurst.

Overall, the College is very proud of the class of 2021. They navigated difficult times and proved very successful in their studies, school leadership and their contribution to College life. Twenty five percent (25%) of Year 12 totalling thirty-three (33) students gained ATARs above 90 with 16 of them gaining ATARs above 95, which ranks them in the highest levels of the state, especially creditable as St Pius X College is a non-selective school. As is so often the case, the top students are also highly engaged and involved – active in music, public speaking, debating, sport, peer support and peer mentoring. They were ably led by an excellent Captain in Liam Chang with Vice Captains Alec Ramsbottom and Nicholas Ward, who all achieved ATARs above 90 while performing many public duties over the year. The class of 2021 is a credit to their families and to the many staff who supported them through their time at the College.
