All students, irrespective of year level, are to have access
to computing resources. Each student will be entitled to use
these resources for educational purposes, to facilitate communication,
to provide access to information and to assist in the preparation
of assignments. Users must be responsible for their actions
and be aware that access may be reduced as a consequence of
misuse of the system.
It is each user's responsibility to ensure:-
- his password is unique and confidential;
- on completion of a session he logs off from the network;
- a current backup of his own files is maintained;
- no use is made of outside programmes, simulations or
games (i.e. those not provided by staff);
- appropriate use is made of information obtained from
CD-ROMs, the intranet, or the Internet;
- all floppy discs are scanned for viruses before use;
- the discovery of a virus is reported to the teacher immediately;
- a report is made to the teacher if inappropriate data
is found on computers or is detected being transmitted over
the network;
- he is not in a computer room without supervision;
- food and drink are not consumed in the computer rooms;
- system failures are reported immediately to a teacher;
- the use of printer paper is kept to a reasonable and
responsible level for the completion of stipulated educational
activities and, where possible, paper is recycled.
The following activities are not acceptable:
- attempts to harm, modify or delete the data of another
user, information service or network;
- use of another person's logon, password or account;
- the changing of another's password;
- disrupting computer facilities through vandalism of hardware,
software or operating systems;
- contaminating the system with a virus or worm;
- wasting paper whether deliberately, or through poor practice
such as the failure to preview a print run;
- harassment; this includes; annoying users, interfering
in legitimate work, distracting other user with unnecessary
noise, disruptive behaviour and the sending of unnecessary,
frivolous messages;
- violation of privacy, including the transmission of,
or revelation of personal data;
- sending anonymous E-mail;
- transmitting or deliberately accessing data that is:
threatening, obscene, bigoted, abusive, defamatory, racist
sexist or discriminatory;
- commercial use of the college resources;
- breaching copyright laws (piracy);
- using materials without due acknowledgment (plagiarism);
- using the system to gain unauthorised access to another
computer facility (hacking);
- undertaking any other illegal activities as defined under
the Australian Commonwealth Government Telecommunications
Act 1989, and applicable State and Commonwealth laws.
- Pius College makes no guarantee of any kind, whether
expressed or implied, for the computing services it provides.
The College will not be responsible for damages a user suffers,
including the loss of data.
- The provision of computer resources at Pius College is
made for the benefit of all. Users identified as being a
security risk, who create problems for other users or with
the system as indicated above, will be penalised by the
removal or reduction of access to the facilities. The college
reserves the right to review any material to determine whether
specific uses of resources are appropriate.
