St Pius X College uses the following version of the Harvard System of Referencing.
N.B. Different Educational Institutions use different styles for a bibliography, so it is important to check the correct style of bibliography. Sometimes even different schools within the one university require different styles for a bibliography.

For books and encyclopedias

  • Author/Editor

For Periodicals and magazines

  • Title of article
  • Journal/serial title
  • Volume, Number
  • Day/month/season of publication
  • Page numbers on which the article appears

For Internet and Multimedia

  • Author/editor
  • Year of publication

  • Type of medium [e.g. CD-ROM, Online, etc]
  • Publisher if known
  • Place of Publication if known

Correct form of Bibliographic Record for a Book

1. Surname/s of Author/s, Given name/s and/or initials

  • If there more than one author put them in the order they appear e.g. Manley, Deborah A., Brown, Paul and Smith, Allan.
  • If there is no author put under editor, compiler or institution responsible.

2. Year of Publication in brackets

  • This is the latest copyright date which appears next to the copyright symbol , e.g.(2001).

3. Title underlined or in italics · Include title as it appears on the title page.

  • If there is a subtitle, add it after the title, separating it with a colon e.g. Study power: a guide to improved study skills.
  • If there is no author, editor etc, the title is the first entry.

4. Edition

  • The edition is usually found on the verso (back) of the title page: may be 2nd, 3rd, revised, new etc.
  • If the edition is not the first, put it straight after the title or subtitle, e.g. Life in Australia, Rev.ed.

5. Publisher

  • Do not confuse with printer.

6. Place of Publication

  • The place of publication is always a city or town, NOT a state or country.
  • Do not confuse with place of Printing.

Periodical or Newspaper Article

1. Surname/s of Author/s, Given name/s and/or initials.

2. Year in brackets.

3. Title of Article.

  • If there is no author - title of article goes first.

4. Title of Journal or Newspaper underlined or in italics.

5. Volume, Number, Date of publication.

6. Page numbers of articles.

 

 

Correct Form of Bibliographic Record for Article from
World Wide Web or other Electronic Sources

1. Surname/s of Author/s, Given name/s and/or initials.

  • If there is no author put under editor, compiler or institution responsible.

2. Year in brackets.

  • For internet sites - date last updated

3. Title underlined or in italics.

  • For internet sites include title of section and the whole site if it is a large site
  • Title will be the first entry if there is no author, editor or organization responsible.

4. Type of medium in square brackets e.g. [Online] or [CD-Rom]

5. Publisher if available.

6. Place of Publication if available.

7. For Internet sites web address and access date:

  • Available from <URL> and [date accessed].

 

Punctation

Punctuation must be consistant. Note the publication used when you click on each of the examples buttons.

Abbreviations used in bibliographies

ed. = editor
comp = compiler or selector
et al. = and others (Latin)
p. = page
pp. = pages
