ST PIUS X
COLLEGE BOARD
In 1996, the Congregation of Christian Brothers
established a school board at the College as
part of the collaborative governance of the
College. During the intervening years, the Board
has developed into what it is today; this
on-going growth has been beneficial to both the
Board and the College.
In October 2007, governance transitioned from
the Christian Brothers’ St Mary’s Provincial
Leadership Team at Balmain to Edmund Rice
Education Australia (EREA). The EREA
organisation with 38 colleges commenced its
operation as a significant contributor to
education in Australia, with over 40,000 boys
enrolled in EREA Colleges. That is 20% of boys
in catholic secondary schools being educated in
the Edmund Rice tradition.
The Board is known as St Pius X College Board
and consists of no more than twelve members.
After a nomination/selection process has taken
place, the Province Leader of the Christian
Brothers appoints members for a term of three
years. Upon completion of their term of office,
members are eligible for re-appointment.
Normally, no appointed member will serve more
than three consecutive terms.
Despite this change in governance structure for
the College, the fundamental aim of St Pius X
College remains – to provide high quality
Catholic education in the tradition of Edmund
Rice whilst promoting the spiritual, academic,
social, cultural and physical potential of its
students.
An information evening is conducted annually for
people who are interested in gaining an insight
into the work of the Board. This also is an
opportunity to invite people to put forward an
Expression of Interest to be considered for
Board membership at some time in the future.
Board members and prospective board members are
expected to undertake some training in board
skills and to become familiar with the mission
of the Christian Brothers in their work of
evangelisation.
The Board meets on a regular basis in the
College Board Room. The various Board Committees
also meet regularly.
The Board acts in a consultative/advisory
capacity within the context of governance to
both the Province Leadership Team of the
Christian Brothers and the College Principal. It
does not interfere with the internal management
of the College, nor does it have jurisdiction
over members of staff.
Matters concerning the College that come before
the Board for its consideration concern:
finance, site and facilities, governance, review
of the Strategic Plan (and annual action plans)
for the College and how those documents relate
to the Charter. In performing its role, the
Board works to support those values and achieve
those objectives defined in the Charter for
Edmund Rice Education in Australia.
There is a spiritual and religious dimension to
the role of the Board as it assists in the
fulfillment of the Mission of the Christian
Brothers in the formation of youth within a
Catholic College, in the Edmund Rice tradition.
